By Xuefei Chen Axelsson

STOCKHOLM,  Nov. 25 (Greenpost) —  China-Sweden 2017 The Belt and Road Acupuncture-Moxibustion and Chinese Medicine Forum was held in Stockholm on Saturday.  Over 100 Chinese medicine and Acupuncuture-Moxibustion experts and practitioners participated in the forum.

Gui Congyou, Chinese Ambassador to Sweden spoke at the opening ceremony.  Photo by Lyu Cheng.

Gui said Chinese President Xi Jinping has pointed out in his 19th CPC National Congress report that China should insist on paying attention to both Chinese and western medicine, carrying forward Chinese Medicine. Xi stressed that people should take Belt and Road Initiative as a key starting point to introduce western expertise to China  and go out to discuss further cooperation with the west, consolidating innovation capability and opening up for cooperation to form an all dimension opening up pattern  along both land and sea routes.

Gui said Chinese Medicine is one of the finest parts of Chinese culture and an important part of  exchanges between China and countries along Belt and Road Initiative routes.  It is conducive to communicating with the people of those countries.

Chinese medicine is an important part of Chinese health cause and can be a good reference for people’s health demand. There is a great potential for Chinese medicine to develop.  He hopes that this forum will push forward Sino-Swedish Traditional Chinese Medicine  cooperation into a new stage.

Liu Baoyan, Chairman of the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies said the forum today is particularly important when China actively advocates strengthening China-Nordic cooperation and promoting the development plan of “the Belt and Road“.

Today over 180 countries are beginning to use TCM. In recent years, we have established 16 overseas TCM centers along “the Belt and Road”.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government has also signed agreements about TCM with over 80 countries along “the Belt and Road”. More than 13,000 international students come to China each year to study TCM.

At present, there are over 200,000 acupuncturists working in the countries along “the Belt and Road”, and some of these them are local persons. Meanwhile, more than 30 countries now have hundreds of training institutes, centers, schools and so on.
Acupuncture-Moxibustion is the essence of core of TCM. In 2010, acupuncture-moxibustion was included in the list of representatives of the World Intangible Cultural Heritage and became the intangible cultural heritage of the world. Acupuncture-Moxibustion widely used in various countries, it can be said in more than 180 countries so-called TCM applications is mainly acupuncture-moxibustion. WFAS is an international joint organization for acupuncture-moxibustion in dozens of countries. Over 30 years ago, WFAS has include nearly 200 societies in more than 50 countries. There are already more than 90 societies that are along “the Belt and Road”.

“Last year, we held a conference in Sweden which is “the Belt and Road” promotion for Acupuncture-Moxibustion. We also made some exchanges and trainings on the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques of TCM acupuncture–moxibustion. Now we will confirm that Young’s Acupuncture and TCM (Sweden) Research Institute, as the Swedish “the Belt and Road” TCM Acupuncture-Moxibustion Joint Education Base, works closely with Swedish medical research institutes such as Karolinska Institute. I believe they will make greater contribution at clinical practice, education and scientific research of acupuncture-moxibustion and TCM. The base will also research new medicine and develop new technology by combination of TCM and Western medicine. I believe the base will contribute powerful force for the Swedish people and the world people’s health, ” said Liu.
It is the common vision of all of us to inherit the venerable history and cultural traditions of TCM, to carry forward and improve TCM, and to make benefits to human health. Let us work together, to make greater contribution for the countries along “the Belt and Road” by acupuncture-moxibustion and TCM.

China Special Series: Chinese food–the best food in the world

By Xuefei Chen Axelsson

STOCKHOLM, Nov. 12(Greenpost) — In the early stage of China’s reform and opening up, even we Chinese ourselves felt we have been eating too much and felt we Chinese only pay attention to eating.

We used to joke about ourselves to say that our Chinese is an ethnic group that is good at eating.

Then I also began to travel around the world. I have been to Australia first and stayed in Sydney for half a year.  We cooked Chinese food every day and felt the China Town’s food was not bad.

Then I stayed in Zimbabwe for two years and cooked a lot myself and then I stayed in New Zealand for a year.  In London I stayed for four months and a couple of weeks in the US and Canada as well as Spain and other Nordic countries.

I boasted to have travelled all over the world and then came back to China, I felt the Chinese food is the best in the world.

This summer I and my family travelled to Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Suzhou, Jinzhou, Shenyang and Dalian.  Wherever we went, we tasted very good Chinese food.

In Shanghai we have the delicate green vegetables and many other kinds of food.  In China, people do love food and food is the basis for all the other aspects of life, innovation, invention, high technology and so on.  Even if you produce space shuttle or a lot of cars, you still need to eat good food.

You spend about three hundred, you can have a whole table of good food and eat a full.  Coming back to Sweden, we have to come back to a single dish or very few fresh vegetables.

Chinese food is fresh with a lot of different kinds of vegetables. Chinese food is delicious.  Of course I know a lot of people are not used to Chinese food and don’t appreciate it because they are not used to it.

But comparatively speaking, I feel lucky to be able to eat Chinese food and I really think Chinese food is the best in the world because in the food there is a lot of culture and history as well as stories in them.  And for me the best food is the Tofo and cabbage in Northeast China.

Of course I shouldn’t be so narrow-minded, I think Swedish have a lot of kinds of food for herb use too, such as using plum or linfrö to cure certain diseases.  Chinese food too can be used as a kind of medicine to cure chronicle diseases.

Vanessa Redgrave has received the Stockholm Life Time Achievement Award

By Xuefei Chen Axelsson

STOCKHOLM, Nov. 10(Greenpost)–This year’s Stockholms Lifetime Achievement Award goes to the Acadamy Award-winning actress and Hollywood legend Vanessa Redgrave. In connection to the screening of her debute as a director with the documentary Sea Sorrow, the actress will tonight visit Stockholm International Film Festival to receive the Bronze Horse.

Motivation: This year’s winner of the Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award has been one of the most prominent actors in the world for over five decades and has been named ”the greatest living actress of our time” by Tennesse Williams. She is as brilliant in costume dramas and political documentaries as she is in works of some of the greatest auteurs in cinematic history. With astonishing force and great social commitment, Vanessa Redgrave has made acting her life’s work.

Redgrave has an impressive career with over a hundred movies, reaching over five decades, behind her. But now she is changing path and makes her debute as a director with the documentary Sea Sorrow. The film will also be screened at the Stockholm Film Festival.

Vanessa Redgrave is famous for her part in the movie Blow Up, directed by Michelangelo Antonionis. Other roles include Murder On The Orient Express (1974), Julia (1977), for which she won an Acadamy Award for best female supporting actress, and Mission: Impossible (1996). Vanessa Redgrave is also one of few who has been awarded both an Acadamy Award, a Tony and an Emmy.

She is also known for her involvement in politics throughout her career. During the Vietnam war she was an outspoken opponent and in her Acadamy Award speech in 1977 she drew great media attention to herself for openly criticising Israel.

This political involvement becomes even clearer in her touching debute as a director with Sea Sorrow. The documentary is a strong tale about migration, the refugee crisis and war, where Redgraves own experiences from the second world war is combined with reflections about todays global influx of migrants.

The film is a powerful outreach for humanism in a time of national tendencys and corresponds with this years festival theme – Change.

The Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually to honor and acknowledge a longstanding career and an outstanding achievement in cinema. The prestigious award, in the shape of a 7,3kg (16 lb) Bronze Horse is the heaviest film award in the world. It is also a paraphrase on a national design icon, the Swedish Dala horse, and was created by artist Fredrik Swärd. The prize has previously been awarded to directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Quentin Tarantino, David Cronenberg, David Lynch, Oliver Stone and Mike Leigh.

Timothy

Freehand i Pekingoperas scenen.

Skönheten i Pekingoperans rollfigurer

Sminkningen

Gesterna

Chinese and Swedish Literary Forum held in Stockholm

By Xuefei Chen Axelsson

STOCKHOLM, Sept. 6(Greenpost)– Chinese and Swedish writers held a literary forum at the Chinese Cultural Center in Stockholm on Monday.

Chinese Ambassador Gui Congyou spoke at the opening of the forum.

“Both China and Sweden have produced many outstanding literary masters with a great variety of classics, which have not only enriched our respective cultures, but also made great contribution to the world literature. ”

He said many Swedish literature works have been translated into Chinese.  And many Chinese literary works have also been translated int ovarious languages including Swedish, for example,  the Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan’s work has been translated into Swedish.

“Today’s forum marks the beginning of a new stage in the exchange and cooperation in literature between our two countries. I am convinced that with further literary exchange and cooperation, the friendship between our two peoples will be deepened and our hearts will be closer, even though we are two countries with different cultural traditions.” said Ambassador Gong.

Ardelius of the Swedish Writers’ Union also speaks at the forum. He said this was an important forum. Early this year,  Swedish writers delegation visited Beijing and also held talks with Chinese writers.  This time the Chinese writers came to Sweden. It is conducive for bilateral exchange.

“A strong foundation of friendship was made and now it is time to build on it. ”

Qian Xiaoqian, Vice President of Chinese Writers’ Association said at the opening of the forum that China and Sweden have witnessed a long history of literary communication.

“I hope this forum shall be able to further friendship and cooperation between our two writers organizations and fellow writers of China and Sweden.  We need to take effective and efficient measures to set up a platform for exchange between writers and translators of our two countries. We also need to enrich our interactions and push mutual translations of literary works, so that we shall enable our audiences to read more literary works of the other country, making literature and writers a bridge and ambassador of friendship between peoples of China and Sweden.”

The Chinese writers include Bi Feiyu, Yang Hongying, Ge Fei and Dong Xi and Qian Xiaoqian and Zhang Tao. The Swedish writers and translators  include Anna Gustavsson Chen who was also moderator for the forum, Ardelius and Kajsa, Gunne.

Yang Hongying’s children’s books were sold 50 million copies in China which was really impressive. She said she spent a lot of time to study children’s psychology.

An intresting discussion about the characteristics of the writers and critical discussion about modern literature. The writers also discussed about Lu Xun and it was revealed that Lu Xun was the first Chinese writer whom the Nobel Committee commissioned Sven Hedin to talk with him. But Lu Xun said he felt no Chinese writer was qualified for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

However, most writer agreed that Lu Xun was a great writer that stood the test of time. Of course, there are also many other great writers in China.

Pu Zhengdong, Director of the China Cultural Center in Stockholm and Cultural Counselor opened the forum by introducing the guests.

A lot of Swedish writers, literary lovers and journalists including Ola Wong attended the forum.

2017 Stockholm World Water Week stresses values of water

Stockholm ,1 September (Greenpost)–Understanding and recognizing the many different values attached to water is the key to more efficient use – a must as more people have to share the world’s limited fresh water. This was the conclusion at the end of the World Water Week on Friday in Stockholm.  Xuefei Chen Axelsson has more.

Over 3,200 participants from 133 countries have attended several hundred sessions, shared experiences, and discussed solutions to the world’s most critical water challenges. The number of the people has been the highest so far.

Water is the lifeline of our civilization. Without it, there is no hope of sustaining households, industries, food and energy production, or such key functions as hospitals. Access to safe water is necessary in order to implement the global development agenda, said SIWI Executive Director Torgny Holmgren, host of the World Water Week.

“With increasing scarcity, we must recognize the many values attached to water, be it economic, social, environmental, cultural or religious. I believe that by re-valuing water, we will develop a deeper understanding and respect for this precious resource, and thus be better prepared for more efficient use,” added Holmgren.

During the week, delegates discussed all kinds of issues related to water which the theme of this year is water and water, reduce and reuse.

Throughout World Water Week, links were made between the different values of water, including its monetary value.

“I believe we will see more diverse pricing structures in the future, allowing for more economical and efficient use,” said Holmgren.

A growing global population is creating a higher demand for fresh water. Climate-driven changes in weather patterns, leading to extended droughts and devastating floods, further exacerbate pressure on our common water resources.

“Efficient use, therefore, is not an option but a must to ensure availability for all of us,” Holmgren added.

Another focus of World Water Week is the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a filmed message to World Water Week, Amina J Mohamed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, pressed on the need to accelerate progress towards SDG6 on clean water and sanitation and on all the water-related sustainable development goals.

“Today, strains on water are rising in all regions and climate change is aggravating the challenge. When water is unequally shared, or perceived to be, the risk of local and national conflict increases. We are even seeing in some cases the use of water as a weapon of war.

The priority now is to harness national leadership and global partnership to scale up action. Only by ensuring the sustainability of fresh water and access to sanitation for all will we achieve the SDGs. Let us value and treasure water as we value and treasure life itself,” concluded Amina J Mohamed.

Nomvula Mokonyane, Minister of Water and Sanitation in South Africa, stressed that we need to embrace new technologies which support our route towards the realization of the SDGs and that an appreciation must also be given to new world class technologies emanating from Africa. “We cannot afford to continue to do what we did yesterday and expect to see a different result tomorrow. We must be bold!” said Minister Mokonyane.

Mark Watts from C40, an organization that gathers mayors of cities worldwide, told World Water Week participants about the risks that big cities face from climate change and how water is key to mitigation and adaptation efforts.

“We see that water pattern disruption is often the first sign of serious climate impacts and 70 per cent of our member cities tell us that they are already seeing the significant and negative impacts of climate change. 64 per cent of our member cities face significant risk from surface and flash floods, Watts said, adding that water must be part of the climate mitigation programmes, but also a central part of climate adaptation.

World Water Week hosted an event taking stock of water in the implementation of both Agenda 2030 and the Paris Climate Agreement. Addressing the event, Hungarian President János Áder said the world needs a more focused global effort towards tackling water challenges.

Two prizes were awarded during World Water Week. On Tuesday 29 August, Stockholm Junior Water Prize was awarded to Ryan Thorpe and Rachel Chang, USA, for their novel approach to detect and purify water contaminated with Shigella, E. coli, Salmonella, and Cholera. H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden presented the prize.
